Winter Music
Friday, December 09, 2011 7:30 PM
Cary Senior Center Ballroom, Bond Park
Cary, NC
Again this year the band joins with the Cary Senior Center in our third annual musical celebration of the holiday season. You’ll hear the old familiar carols you’ve sung for years. Perhaps you’ll sing along. With the popular songs about winter and snow and the like, there’ll be music recalling Christmas, Hanukkah, and other holidays of the season. And of course, there’ll be a Sleigh Ride, courtesy of Leroy Anderson and numbers arranged especially for the Cary Town Band. And as a special treat, we'll be joined by WRAL's Greg Fishel narrating a delightful musical adaptation of Clement Moore's Twas the Night Before Christmas. Come enjoy all your favorite melodies as we bring you music for the holidays - Winter Music.

Instrument Petting Zoo
Part of the CAC Dedication and Open House
Saturday August 13, 2011 10:00 am
Cary Arts Center - Principal's Hall, Downtown,
Cary, NC
Immediately following the band's concert on the CAC theater stage, some members of the band will move to the CAC Principal's Hall to host a musical instrument "Petting Zoo". There will be band instruments of all shapes and descriptions for you to see up close and personal - instruments representative of every section in the band and a few that do not appear regularly in modern concerts. Among others, there will be an entire family of clarinets from Eb Soprano to Bb Bass; various tubas and Sousaphones; piccolos and flutes, saxophones (that make only the rare appearance in CTB concerts); and more. We hope you'll stop by to see and listen - and carefully touch and feel. (And for a select few instruments and your great care, you may even get a chance to try to make a sound on one or two.) See you at the CAC Dedication.

March Around the World
Friday, May 06, 2011 7:30 PM
Sertoma Amphitheatre in Bond Park
Cary, NC
The traditional musical “march” is a phenomenon of western civilization, first appearing in Europe in the late 16th century. Now, a march is a march is a march, right? Well, not exactly. Marches come in many flavors with characteristic differences, depending on the setting and the nationality and culture of the composer. Come explore with the band as we march around Europe and America to sample a wide variety of musical delights from a smorgasbord filled with “marches”. From north to south, from east to west, from a street parade to a tattoo, from a funeral to the concert hall to the circus, we’ll nibble a little of each as we March Around the (western) World. This is an all-expenses-paid trip you won’t want to miss, room and board included.

They were later joined by dancers from the Little German Band and Dancers, who waltzed away as the band played Viennese waltzes. At the end, some danced with young people from the audience as a few couples from the audience joined in. Wiener Prateleben by Siegfried Translateur was omitted due to time constraints. |

Move Your Feet
Friday, October 22, 2010 7:30 PM
Senior Center, Bond Park
Cary, NC
Does music ever make you want to move your feet – to waltz or tango, polka or march, or just shuffle around? Then this concert is for you, full of just those kinds of music to help you move those feet. Featuring Bennett’s Suite of Old American Dances, with moves you probably haven’t seen recently, there’ll also be a Blue Tango, a mournful waltz, a Strauss Polka, and even Arabian Dances (belly-dancers optional). To top it all off we’ll hear from The Music Man with Lida Rose, Marian the Librarian, and the whole cast dancing off with 76 Trombones. We’ll toss in a few more irresistible rhythms and guarantee you’ll leave with your feet moving. Come dance with us.
The Concert Silly Prize for this concert:
- paper napkins printed with western boots (recalling the "Western One-Step" movement of the "Suite of Old American Dances"),
- a bookmark printed with "Dance from story to story",
- a packet of tissues (for wiping away tears from all the "sad" music featured),
- a 4x6 picture frame with a ballet slippers tassle (for dancing) including a picture of the 1987 Cary Town Band (the picture on the top of the History page ) trimmed to show the CTB banner, bass drum, our beloved bass drummer for so many years, Milderd Phelps, two tuba players, and former director and founder Dr. Jim Hammerle.
Congratulations to the drawing winner: Lisa Tichavsky of Cary, NC.

In the Army Now
(With the 82nd Airborne Division "All American" Band,
Bandmaster and Commander CW2 Russell J. Houser)
Friday, September 10, 2010 7:30 PM
Sertoma Amphitheatre, Bond Park
Cary, NC
The band opens this concert season with “army music” – music written for or by soldiers; music recalling events involving armies; and, joining forces with the 82nd Airborne Division "All American" Band from Fort Bragg, music performed with active army personnel. Of course the US Army march, Sousa’s US Field Artillery, will be included along with British and Russian Army marches. We’ll hear about Anderson’s Phantom Regiment and boogie with a bugle boy. Von Suppé’s Light Cavalry charges and we'll recall some battle in 1812. All together, it will be an explosive and grand musical event you won’t want to miss. See you in the field.
The Concert Silly Prize for this concert - an official Army combat uniform design backpack filled with three footballs (deflated so they couldn't be thrown at the band), nine cold-weather head protective units (pullover fleece hats), and six Army tee-shirts all with the DSTB (Division Special Troops Battalion - the Band's parent organization) logo.. Congratulations to the drawing winner: Ann Barns of Raleigh, NC.

Saturday, July 03, 2010 7:30 PM
Sertoma Amphitheatre, Bond Park
Cary, NC
Come join us for the 23rd annual pre-4th of July patriotic salute to our nation's birth and the service personnel past and present who have helped secure our liberty and freedom. Enjoy many familiar marches and tunes that compliment the occasion. The band joins forces with the James Baker Chorale as we present stirring arrangements of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, God Bless America, and John Williams’ Hymn to the Fallen. Our speaker this year is U.S. Army Bandmaster and Commander of the 82nd Airborne Division Band, CW2 Russell J. Houser, recounting his recent tour of duty with his band in Afghanistan – “Band in Sand”. It’s an annual event you will not want to miss. See you there.

² A fire Friday afternoon July 2nd destroyed the 82nd Airborne Division Band's rehearsal location including all their instruments, uniforms, and their entire music library. Because his band was to provide a major portion of Fort Bragg's July 4th celebration, two days later, bandmaster Houser's priorities immediately and completely understandably shifted from being a guest speaker at the CTB concert to finding music, instruments, and all the infrastructure required for his band to meet their concert obligations at Fort Bragg. The time allotted for his presentation was filled by presenting additional music not included in the original program - Pirates of the Caribbean Suite. There was a "song & dance" explanation added as to how "Pirates of the Caribbean" actually complimented the concert theme - Band in Sand - "band of pirates; sandy beaches of Caribbean islands". |

Sailing, sailing, over the bounding Main. Most everyone knows a song of the sea, and hums a short refrain. And the band will have you humming along as we ride the waves with some familiar music inspired by tales of the sea. Recall Victory at Sea with the Guadalcanal March and adventure at sea with the Pirates of the Caribbean Suite. Throw in Rosas’ Over the Waves and Sousa’s Queen of the Sea Waltzes , a Strauss polka, and an unexpected splash or two, and you have a wonderful musical celebration of the sea. Come splash along with us.

Do you like movies? Do you recall that music that played behind the scene? Come remember some of your favorites as the band brings that music to the foreground – still wonderful even without the actors and the scenery. Hear the River Kwai and Lawrence, and Liz and Richard (Taylor and Burton) on the beach. Don’t forget the Looney Tunes before the feature as Elmer (or was it Bugs) directs that strange symphony in an unforgettable von Suppé Poet and Peasant Overture. Then there’s Prokofiev’s little tune that pops up in many flicks. And there’s more to tickle your memory. Come enjoy an evening of music At the Theater.

Celebrating Abraham Lincoln - 22nd Annual Patriotic Presentation
July 3, 2009 7:30 PM
Sertoma Amphitheatre, Bond Park
Cary, NC
Come join us for our 22nd annual per-4th of July patriotic salute to our nation's birth and the service personnel past and present who have helped secure our liberty. In addition, this year we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Our featured speaker will be NCSU professor emeritus and noted Lincoln historian Dr. William Harris recalling the influence of the Founding Fathers on Lincoln. Musical selections include works that were heard in or recall the Lincoln Whitehouse – The Battle of Shiloh, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Dixie, Swanee Rag, Garry Owen, the 1855 version of the Star Spangled Banner, and the Abe Lincoln Centennial March in a new arrangement by our own Yoshio Nakamura. It’s an annual event you won’t want to miss. See you there.
